Area where
book donations are needed for. Villages in and around
Sisaket, Surin and Ubon Ratchathani in Issan (Northeastern
Thailand) between the Cambodia and Laos borders.
Sisaket is a
province of Thailand and is located in the northeastern area known as
Issan in close vicinity to the Laos and Cambodia borders. Agriculture is
the main economic activity, but despite its dominance of the economy,
agriculture in the region is extremely problematic. The climate is prone
to drought, while the flat terrain of the plateau is often flooded in
the rainy season. The tendency to flood renders a large proportion of
the land unsuitable for cultivation. Sisaket is Thailand's poorest
region with average wages at less than US$100 per month. The region's
poverty is also shown in its infrastructure: Sisaket has the fewest
physicians per capita with one per 14,660; the fewest hospital beds per
head, etc. In Sisaket, although many of the houses have
electricity, the lines are only held up by long bamboo sticks. As
for roads, a lot of the province, besides a few main roads, are just
dirt making places hard to access without 4WD vehicles. |
