LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the kindhearted efforts of  Andrew Titley who collected and delivered elementary school books to disadvantaged children in Thailand


WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor the youth of today, and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best
exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and


WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its longstanding traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the kindhearted efforts of Andrew Titley who collected and delivered elementary school books to disadvantaged children in Thailand; and


WHEREAS, Over the course of the past year, Andrew Titley of Oceanside,
New York, collected over 60,000 elementary school books from local schools, libraries and other donors; and


WHEREAS, Andrew Titley then arranged to have sponsors ship the books
to Bangkok and then to Ubon Ratchathani in Northeastern Thailand on the border of Laos and Cambodia; and


WHEREAS, On July 1, 2005, Andrew Titley went to Ubon Ratchathani, where he stayed for a month and hand delivered the books each day to elementary schools in the Sisaket area; the students live in dire poverty and the books, about 750 per school, were well received by the teachers and the students; and


WHEREAS, In addition, Andrew Titley talked with over 15,000 students, many of whom had never met, seen or spoken with a foreigner before, during his month in Thailand, telling them about the importance of learning English in order to have a brighter future for themselves and their families; and


WHEREAS, A gifted student and the GO Student President at Oceanside High School, Andrew Titley kept a daily record of his activities on his website, www.ThaiBookDrive.com; and


WHEREAS, Andrew Titley exemplifies the best potential which is inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; he has brought enduring honor to his family and community through the impressive dedication he displayed while representing America to the people of Thailand; and


WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it


RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commend the kindhearted efforts of Andrew Titley who collected and delivered elementary school books to disadvantaged children in Thailand, and to wish him success in all of his future endeavors; and be it further


RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Andrew Titley.
